Work on the $2.25 billion upgrade to Melbourne’s M80 ring road is underway, with the first sod being turned on the first section between the Tullamarine Freeway and Sydney Road.

The upgrade is expected to increase traffic capacity while improving safety and easing congestion along the busy corridor.

The project is due for completion in December 2012 and is being carried out by Thiess, PB, Hyder and VicRoads.

The Victorian Government also announced works to reduce flooding and remove the height restriction on Breakwater Road in Belmont, south of Geelong, has been given the green light.

The $63 million project will aim to prevent the bridges closure during heavy rains, which prevents some 20,000 vehicles a day from crossing the bridge.

Construction work on the project is expected to start in the middle of next year and be completed by the end of 2012.
